Overview
6 Day Mgahinga Hiking Safari; Mgahinga is a home to the mountain Gorillas the park is situated in south western Uganda not far from the famous Bwindi Forest. The park also is situated in the border between Uganda, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Mgahinga is a home to one group of the habituated gorillas that is open for gorilla trekking on daily basis. The is also a home to habituated Golden monkeys that you can track alongside the Gorillas.
While on this trip, you will be able to track both the gorillas and the Golden monkeys in their natural habitat, volcano hiking, as well as meet and interact with the Batwa local communities living in surrounding areas of the park.

Day to Day Detailed Itinerary
Your journey begins with a pick up from the hotel or upon arrival in Kigali, Rwanda’s vibrant capital city. After clearing immigration and customs, you are met by your tour guide who provides a warm welcome and a brief introduction to the exciting adventure ahead. You depart Kigali, embarking on a scenic drive through the stunning landscapes of Rwanda, known as the “Land of a Thousand Hills.” As you approach the Uganda-Rwanda border, the anticipation builds. Upon crossing the border, the terrain begins to change, with rolling hills giving way to the rugged beauty of southwestern Uganda. After several hours, you arrive at Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, nestled in the Virunga Mountains. Check into your lodge, where you can relax and acclimate to the altitude. The evening is spent enjoying dinner and a briefing from your guide about the activities planned for the coming days.

The second day of your adventure begins early with a hearty breakfast at your lodge. You then head to the park headquarters for a briefing about the day’s activities. The first highlight of the day is tracking the golden monkeys, an endangered species endemic to the Virunga region. Accompanied by experienced trackers, you trek through bamboo forests, ascending the slopes of the mountains. The trek can be challenging, but the sight of the playful and charismatic golden monkeys swinging through the trees makes it worthwhile. After spending an hour observing these fascinating primates, you return to the lodge for lunch and a brief rest. In the afternoon, you embark on a nature walk that takes you through diverse habitats within the park, offering opportunities to spot various bird species, small mammals, and unique plant life. The walk also includes a visit to the Garama Cave, historically used by the Batwa people. Return to your lodge for dinner and relaxation.

Day three is the highlight of your safari – gorilla trekking. After an early breakfast, you gather at the park headquarters for a detailed briefing. Trekking to see the mountain gorillas can take several hours depending on the location of the gorilla family you are assigned to, but the experience is unforgettable. Accompanied by armed rangers and expert guides, you navigate through dense forest and steep terrain. When you finally encounter the gorillas, you are allowed to spend an hour observing them in their natural habitat. Watching these gentle giants, their interactions, and their human-like behavior is a profound experience. After the trek, you return to the lodge for lunch and spend the rest of the afternoon at leisure, reflecting on the incredible experience. Dinner is served at the lodge.

After breakfast, you set out for a hike to Mount Gahinga, one of the three volcanoes within the park. The hike takes you through various vegetation zones, from montane forests to alpine moorlands. The ascent is moderately challenging but offers spectacular views of the surrounding landscapes. As you reach the summit, you are rewarded with panoramic vistas of the Virunga Mountains and the beautiful countryside. The crater at the top, filled with giant lobelia plants, is a sight to behold. After enjoying a packed lunch at the summit, you begin your descent back to the base. The evening is spent back at the lodge, where you can unwind and share stories of the day’s adventure over dinner.

Day five offers a cultural immersion with the Batwa people, the indigenous forest dwellers who once lived in the park before it was designated as a national park. After breakfast, you embark on a guided Batwa cultural trail. The Batwa guides share their rich heritage, demonstrating traditional hunting techniques, medicinal plants, and ways of life in the forest. This experience provides a deep understanding of their connection to the forest and the challenges they face today. You also visit a Batwa community to see how they are adapting to life outside the forest. Lunch is enjoyed within the community, featuring traditional Batwa cuisine. Return to your lodge in the afternoon and check out and transfer to Lake Bunyonyi. Lake Bunyonyi is popular safari destination for several coming from gorilla trekking. This place is conducive and peaceful for night rest. Upon arrival, here, check in to the lodge, have dinner and overnight stay.

On the final day, you enjoy a leisurely breakfast before starting your journey back to Kigali. Upon arrival in Kigali, you might have some time for a brief city tour, visiting local markets or historical sites depending on your flight schedule. Finally, you are transferred to Kigali International Airport for your departure, bringing your six-day Mgahinga hiking safari to a close. This adventure leaves you with lasting memories of the incredible wildlife, breathtaking landscapes, and rich cultural experiences you’ve encountered along the way.
