Mount Kilimanjaro to the northwest and south, the Pare and Usambara Mountains, and Kenya's massive Tsavo National Park to the north all provide common ground for migratory herds of elephant, oryx, and zebra during the wet season. Together with Tsavo, it forms one of the world's largest and most important protected habitats. Mkomazi National Park is unique in that it features both a black rhinoceros sanctuary and a captive-breeding program for African wild dogs. Seeing these two rare endangered species, together with giraffes, elands, hartebeests, zebras, buffaloes, elephants, and long-necked gerenuks, is a once-in-a-million opportunity. Birdwatching is great, with over 450 avian species documented, including endemics such the cobalt-chested vulturine guinea-fowl and other huge ground birds like ostrich, kori bustard, secretary bird, and ground hornbill. After the game drive, you will be dropped up at Moshi/JRO.
