7 Days Northern Malawi Budget Safari
Malawi, the "Warm Heart of Africa," extends a warm welcome. This morning, our Malawi Safari Tour departs from Lilongwe, the capital of Malawi.
Driving northward from Lilongwe, we travel approximately 3.5 hours to the Viphya Plateau. The Viphya Mountains, which are situated approximately 5500 feet (1700 meters) above sea level, provide a refreshingly mild climate. The tranquil Luwawa Valley is our initial destination in northern Malawi.
Our initial safari lodge, which is situated a mere stone's throw from the Luwawa Forest Reserve, is situated in the stunning mountains of Viphya. It offers a stunning view of the Luwawa Dam. Explore the region on foot after settling in at the picturesque lodge, which is surrounded by indigenous forests and pine trees. As we traverse the forests of Viphya, we anticipate observing a diverse array of species.
This afternoon, you have the opportunity to participate in a variety of thrilling activities at the Luwawa Forest Lodge, Malawi's premier outdoor activity center. Choose from a diverse selection of activities, such as horseback riding, cycling, canoeing, rock climbing, abseiling, trail walking, angling, and birdwatching.
The day concludes with a dinner and beverages at the solar-powered lodge, followed by a comfortable night's sleep in your chalet. Mosquito nets and fans are included in the en-suite rooms, which are also capacious.

On the second day of our Northern Malawi Safari, we continue our journey northward to Livingstonia. We will stop in Mzuzu for supper (at our own expense) before continuing our journey to our next lodge in Livingstonia.
Livingstonia, a historical landmark in Malawi, was established by the renowned explorer David Livingstone. This was the penultimate mission station of the Livingstonia Mission in Central Africa, which was established in 1894. The town is an excellent starting point for excursions to the cascades in the region and provides picturesque views of Lake Malawi.
Settle into our delightful eco-lodge, which is situated on a mushroom farm and offers a picturesque view of Lake Malawi. Then, embark on a trek to one of the waterfalls or one of the viewpoints that offer a view of the Great Rift Valley, Lake Malawi, and Tanzania beyond. Tonight, we will reside in accommodations that are both clean and basic, yet still comfortable, located on the escarpment, surrounded by nature.

Day three in northern Malawi is dedicated to the exploration of the Mushroom Farm and Livingstonia Area. Your guide has the option of leading you on a trek through the forest or providing a historical tour of Livingstonia. Enjoy the breathtaking mountain vistas by strolling through the lodge's permaculture gardens.
At the lodge, you have the option to request nutritious meals that are prepared with locally sourced ingredients at your own expense or to utilize the self-catering kitchen to prepare your own.

This morning, you are welcome to partake in breakfast at the eco-lodge situated on the clifftop (at your own expense). Subsequently, we will descend to the picturesque northern coasts of Lake Malawi. We traverse the lakeshore south to Mzuzu before entering the Rift Valley to reach Chintheche, following the renowned 22-hairpin bend road that descends the escarpment.
We will make a halt in the lively village of Nkhata Bay for lunch (at your own expense) during our journey. We then proceed to Chintheche, which is located slightly further south.
Chintheche is home to some of the most exceptional beaches along the borders of the expansive freshwater Lake Malawi. Lake Malawi, the southernmost lake in the East African Rift Valley, is characterized by its clear, warm waters and tropical climate, which make it an ideal destination for water activities and relaxation on the sandy beaches. The rich culture of Malawi, which is renowned for its warm and hospitable people, is also revealed as we explore its natural beauty.
The subsequent lodge on our Northern Malawi Safari Tour is situated in meticulously maintained gardens along its own private beach. We reside in chalets with en-suite bathrooms that provide a view of the exclusive port of Lake Malawi. Arrive at the lodge and proceed to the bar for a beverage while admiring the expansive lake. Subsequently, dine at the restaurant at your own expense.

On the fifth day of our Malawi Safari Tour, we will relax on the tropical beaches of Lake Malawi and explore the area around Chintheche. You have the option of exploring the picturesque mountains that surround Lake Malawi or simply unwinding on the sandy shoreline.
Your safari guide is delighted to assist you in organizing optional activities in the vicinity. The secluded Makuzi Bay offers a diverse selection of enjoyable activities, such as fishing, kayaking, sailing, yoga, and snorkeling. The estuary provides a picturesque backdrop and exceptional bird-watching opportunities, making it an ideal location for leisurely strolls and tranquility. Indulge in a massage or simply relax in the lake's balmy waters. Participate in a community endeavor or engage in horseback riding or scuba diving in the vicinity. Embark on a village tour that encompasses a museum, community initiatives, a historical missionary site, and a sampling of the local cuisine.

On the final full day of our Malawi Safari, we depart from our tropical sanctuary at Makuzi Beach and travel further south to the Nkhotakhota Wildlife Reserve.
Nkhotakota Wildlife Reserve is the oldest and largest game reserve in Malawi, spanning 1,800 km2 (695mi²) of forested highlands. In recent years, a variety of untamed animals have been reintroduced to Nkhotakota, including more than 500 elephants. Our final overnight stay will be at a serene eco-lodge that is situated on the outskirts of the Nkhotakota Wildlife Reserve. Upon settling into your cozy chalet, you may embark on a leisurely stroll along the Bua River, ensuring that you remain vigilant for birdlife. Alternatively, you may enjoy a revitalizing plunge in the pool and unwind at the bar before indulging in a satisfying dinner in the expansive dining area.
